Nusserhoff Elda Vino Rosso 2016

LOOP LINE TASTING NOTES | From the father-daughter team at Sudderhof, this Schiava (or Vernatsch for those in the know) is named for the family matriarch, Elsa. Dried roses, herbs, red fruits and tobacco.

Schiava is a thin-skinned grape native to Alto Adige and is decreasing in popularity, though we don't understand why as it is delicious. Planted on a steep hillside plot of 90 year old, pergola planted vines on volcanic soils a few kilometres from Bolzano. This field blend is primarily Schiava, with the rest to be either Lagrein, Merlot or generally unidentified. Harvested together, de-stemmed and co-fermented with natural yeasts in stainless steel. Maceration lasts from 4-6 weeks, then aged in 20 hectolitre French oak botti for about 20 months.
